The new, full-time course in Herbal Science is now in its second Term at Cork Institute of Technology.
‘It is going well and the fifteen students are very happy!’ said Emmet Walsh, Medical Herbalist and co-founder of the course. ‘Job opportunities will be very wide once they receive their BSE, Honours Degree,’ he said, ‘but students may then go on for a further, two-year, full-time study in Clinical Herbal Medicine.’
The four-year course, which will provide students with a broad scientific education, was developed in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Medical Herbalists (IIMH) to enable students to study all aspects of herbs and other related medicinal plants. Herbal medicine is the oldest system of medicine in the World and it still forms the basic primary health care for 90% of the World's population. It is imperative in today's society that its value is recognised and investigated for its potential to progress comprehensive primary health care for the future.
The course programme at C.I.T., the only one in Ireland, covers a wide range of subjects, enabling students to appreciate the history and philosophy inherent in the cultural use of herbs. The course encompasses numerous topics which stem from the cultivation, harvest, processing, application and effect of using herbs and other associated plant materials in medicinal and other relevant applications.
